U idućih nekoliko tjedana znanstvenici s vojnog Instituta za istraživanje Walter Reed očekuju kako će objaviti da su razvili cjepivo koje je učinkovito protiv koronavirusa i svih njegovih varijanti, uključujući i omikron, te protiv ranijih virusa SARS-a koji su ubili milijune ljudi diljem svijeta, prenosi Jutarnji.hr.
Postignuće znanstvenika rezultat je gotovo dvogodišnjeg rada. Vojni laboratorij je primio prvu DNK sekvencu koronavirusa koji uzrokuje covid-19 početkom 2020. godine. U ranoj fazi pandemije odjel za zarazne bolesti Instituta Walter Reed odlučio se usredotočiti na izradu cjepiva koje bi djelovalo ne samo protiv postojećeg soja, već i svih njegovih potencijalnih varijanti.
Ranije ove godine je s pozitivnim rezultatima završilo ispitivanje cjepiva Waltera Reeda 'Spike Ferritin Nanoparticle' (SpFN) na životinjama. Prva faza ispitivanja na ljudima, koja je testirala cjepivo protiv omikrona i drugih varijanti, završila je ovog mjeseca također s dobrim rezultatima koji su sada na konačnoj reviziji, rekao je šef odjela za zarazne bolesti Instituta Walter Reed dr. Kayvon Modjarrad.
Za razliku od ostalih cjepiva, SpFN koristi protein u obliku nogometne lopte s 24 različitih 'lica' čime je znanstvenicima omogućeno da pričvrste šiljke različitih sojeva na različita 'lica' proteina.
- Vrlo smo uzbuđeno što smo došli do ove točke istraživanja, rekao je Modjarrad.
Ispitivanja cjepiva na ljudima trajala su dulje nego što se očekivalo, rekao je, jer je laboratorij trebao testirati cjepivo na subjektima koji nisu bili cijepljeni niti su prethodno bili zaraženi covidom.
Povećanje stope cijepljenja i brzo širenje delta i omikron varijanti otežali su istraživanje.
- S omikronom više ne postoji način da pobjegnete od ovog virusa. Nećete moći izbjeći zarazu. Stoga mislim da će uskoro ili cijeli svijet biti cijepljen ili će svi biti zaraženi, poručuje Modjarrad.
Sljedeći korak je vidjeti kako novo cjepivo djeluje kod ljudi koji su prethodno bili cijepljeni ili su prethodno bili bolesni.
- Moramo ga procijeniti u stvarnom okruženju i pokušati razumjeti kako cjepivo djeluje kod mnogo većeg broja osoba koje su već u početku cijepljene nečim drugim... ili su već bile bolesne, rekao je Modjarrad, dodajući da će novo cjepivo i dalje morati proći ispitivanje faze 2 i faze 3.
- Odlučili smo igrati igru na duge staze, a ne se samo fokusirati na izvornu pojavu koronavirusa. Bilo nam je jasno da će virus mutirati i da će se pojaviti nove varijante, kaže Modjarrad.

U idućih nekoliko tjedana znanstvenici s vojnog Instituta za istraživanje Walter Reed očekuju kako će objaviti da su razvili cjepivo koje je učinkovito protiv koronavirusa i svih njegovih varijanti, uključujući i omikron, te protiv ranijih virusa SARS-a koji su ubili milijune ljudi diljem svijeta, prenosi Jutarnji.hr.
Postignuće znanstvenika rezultat je gotovo dvogodišnjeg rada. Vojni laboratorij je primio prvu DNK sekvencu koronavirusa koji uzrokuje covid-19 početkom 2020. godine. U ranoj fazi pandemije odjel za zarazne bolesti Instituta Walter Reed odlučio se usredotočiti na izradu cjepiva koje bi djelovalo ne samo protiv postojećeg soja, već i svih njegovih potencijalnih varijanti.
Ranije ove godine je s pozitivnim rezultatima završilo ispitivanje cjepiva Waltera Reeda 'Spike Ferritin Nanoparticle' (SpFN) na životinjama. Prva faza ispitivanja na ljudima, koja je testirala cjepivo protiv omikrona i drugih varijanti, završila je ovog mjeseca također s dobrim rezultatima koji su sada na konačnoj reviziji, rekao je šef odjela za zarazne bolesti Instituta Walter Reed dr. Kayvon Modjarrad.
Za razliku od ostalih cjepiva, SpFN koristi protein u obliku nogometne lopte s 24 različitih 'lica' čime je znanstvenicima omogućeno da pričvrste šiljke različitih sojeva na različita 'lica' proteina.
- Vrlo smo uzbuđeno što smo došli do ove točke istraživanja, rekao je Modjarrad.
Ispitivanja cjepiva na ljudima trajala su dulje nego što se očekivalo, rekao je, jer je laboratorij trebao testirati cjepivo na subjektima koji nisu bili cijepljeni niti su prethodno bili zaraženi covidom.
Povećanje stope cijepljenja i brzo širenje delta i omikron varijanti otežali su istraživanje.
- S omikronom više ne postoji način da pobjegnete od ovog virusa. Nećete moći izbjeći zarazu. Stoga mislim da će uskoro ili cijeli svijet biti cijepljen ili će svi biti zaraženi, poručuje Modjarrad.
Sljedeći korak je vidjeti kako novo cjepivo djeluje kod ljudi koji su prethodno bili cijepljeni ili su prethodno bili bolesni.
- Moramo ga procijeniti u stvarnom okruženju i pokušati razumjeti kako cjepivo djeluje kod mnogo većeg broja osoba koje su već u početku cijepljene nečim drugim... ili su već bile bolesne, rekao je Modjarrad, dodajući da će novo cjepivo i dalje morati proći ispitivanje faze 2 i faze 3.
- Odlučili smo igrati igru na duge staze, a ne se samo fokusirati na izvornu pojavu koronavirusa. Bilo nam je jasno da će virus mutirati i da će se pojaviti nove varijante, kaže Modjarrad.
