Warner Bros iz kataloga filmova osamdestih danas ponosno izdvaja prvi američki uradak kontroverznog britanskog redatelja Kena Russella, kultni psihodelični SF horor “Izmijenjena stanja” (“Altered States”, 1980.). Naime, upravo je Warner preuzeo “Izmijenjena stanja” kad ga se studio Columbia Pictures odrekao sluteći problematičnu produkciju nakon što je budžet počeo nekontrolirano rasti prije udaranja prve klape.

Problematičnost sugerira i podatak da je 26 redatelja, među ostalim i Arthur Penn (“Bonnie i Clyde”), odbilo snimiti film za koji je scenarij napisao trostruki oskarovac Paddy Chayevsky (“Marty”, “Bolnica”, “TV mreža”) prema vlastitom istoimenom romanu, nadahnutom radom neuroznanstvenika Johna Cunninghama Lillyja.

Dakle, Russell je angažiran kao 27. po redu i njegov angažman je bio pogođen za nekoga tko je režirao nadrealne, halucinatorne filmove kao što su “Demoni”, “Tommy” i “Lisztomania”, ali istovremeno i riskantan budući da je svaki od navedenih bio radikalan i/li šokirao javnost. Rizik se očitovao i u tome da je glavna uloga dodijeljena glumačkom debitantu Williamu Hurtu (tek se trebao proslaviti “Tjelesnom strasti” i “Velikom jezom”).

Ipak, Warner je poznat po rizicima, a rizik se isplatio na duge staze za “Altered States”. Film je završio na 25. mjestu top-liste gledanosti 1980. u američkim kinima, daleko ispod megahita “Imperij uzvraća udarac”, pa i “Isijavanja”, “Flasha Gordona” i “Razjarenog bika” koji su se smatrali financijskim krahovima, posebice potonja dva ostvarenja.

No, godinama kasnije jasno je da se radilo o vizionarskom ostvarenju ispred svoga vremena, odveć ekstravagantnom, drastičnom i ekstremnom da ga (šira) publika pojmi i prihvati u vrijeme kinopremijere. Halucinantna “Izmijenjena stanja” otvorila su portal nove dekade, osamdesetih, kao izrazito vizualan film s pionirskim prostetičkim, ali i računalno potpomognutim efektima, dvije godine prije kompjuterski revolucionarnog “Trona”.

Gledajući nanovo “Altered States” uopće ne iznenađuje da je film snimio direktor fotografije “Blade Runnera” Jordan Cronenweth. Russell je sagradio čvrsti most između LSD psihodelije “djece cvijeća” kasnih šezdesetih/ranih sedamdesetih objedinjene u tripoidnoj “Odiseji u svemiru” i vizualno prijelomnih SF-ova osamdesetih poput “Istrebljivača” te “body horrora” epohe preuzevši štafetu od “Aliena” (“Američki vukodlak u Londonu”, “Stvor”, “Terminator”, “Muha”, “Skriveni”, “RoboCop”...).

U tom procesu redatelj je stvorio unikatnu mješavinu SF-a, psihološkog i tjelesnog horora s internim i eksternim manifestacijama odiseje u svemiru ljudskog uma, odlazeći od psihološke strave vršnjačkog “Isijavanja” prema tjelesnom užasu filmova Davida Cronenberga. Uvodna scena filma je sugestivna po pitanju nadolazeće onostranosti.

Dr. Edward Jessup (Hurt) nalazi se izoliran u vertikalnom spremniku za senzornu deprivaciju nalik starom bojleru i širi granice svoga uma i svijesti. Kad izađe iz komore, Jessup otkriva da je halucinirao samo tako i proživljavao raznolika stanja – stanja sna, mistična stanja... Također, plakao je i ponovno proživljavao očevu smrt.

Jessup proučava šizofreniju koja po njemu nije bolest i istražuje njome izazvana druga stanja svijesti. On je “Faust” spreman “prodati dušu da dozna veliku istinu”. Sedam godina kasnije, Edward na rubu razvoda od supruge Emily (Blair Brown) nastavlja gdje je stao s eksperimentima na sebi, ali odlazi korak dalje do točke pucanja da objasni “besmislen užas života” nakon što je čvaknuo meksičke gljive od Indijanaca.

Kombinacija gljiva i senzorne deprivacije dovest će do toga da se Jessup u umu vrati milijunima godina unatrag i iskusi doživljaj postanka svemira i kreacije čovjeka kao takvog, da otkrije svoje “drugo ja” i “primitivno ja”. Kad Jessup postane “proto-čovjek”, film je preteča “American Werewolf In London” i koketira s dr. Jekyll/mr. Hyde dualnošću, može i dr. Banner/Hulk.

Međutim, znatno su košmarnije “body horror” scene eksternalizacije halucinacije s prizorima deformiranja ruke, stomaka... Općenito govoreći, svaka halucinacija je fascinantna u pirotehničkoj vizualnosti s eksplozijom provokativnih slika i jarkih boja, tj. prelijevanjem surealnih kadrova (jareća glava s multiplim očima, raspeće...).

Režirajući “Izmijenjena stanja”, Russell je probao gljive i to se vidi, ali zato film pršti od nevjerojatne kaleiodoskopske vizualizacije misli/svijesti “izvan našeg poimanja” o bogu, ljubavi, čovjeku i čovjekovu mjestu u svemiru tijekom Jessupove potrage za kozmičkom istinom. Senzorni doživljaj je maksimalno intenziviran u romantičnoj završnici sa svjetlucavim, pregrijanim ljubavnicima koji gore iznutra na razmeđi sadašnjosti i vječnosti. “Altered States” je više od filma. Psihodelično iskustvo.

Warner Bros iz kataloga filmova osamdestih danas ponosno izdvaja prvi američki uradak kontroverznog britanskog redatelja Kena Russella, kultni psihodelični SF horor “Izmijenjena stanja” (“Altered States”, 1980.). Naime, upravo je Warner preuzeo “Izmijenjena stanja” kad ga se studio Columbia Pictures odrekao sluteći problematičnu produkciju nakon što je budžet počeo nekontrolirano rasti prije udaranja prve klape.

Problematičnost sugerira i podatak da je 26 redatelja, među ostalim i Arthur Penn (“Bonnie i Clyde”), odbilo snimiti film za koji je scenarij napisao trostruki oskarovac Paddy Chayevsky (“Marty”, “Bolnica”, “TV mreža”) prema vlastitom istoimenom romanu, nadahnutom radom neuroznanstvenika Johna Cunninghama Lillyja.

Dakle, Russell je angažiran kao 27. po redu i njegov angažman je bio pogođen za nekoga tko je režirao nadrealne, halucinatorne filmove kao što su “Demoni”, “Tommy” i “Lisztomania”, ali istovremeno i riskantan budući da je svaki od navedenih bio radikalan i/li šokirao javnost. Rizik se očitovao i u tome da je glavna uloga dodijeljena glumačkom debitantu Williamu Hurtu (tek se trebao proslaviti “Tjelesnom strasti” i “Velikom jezom”).

Ipak, Warner je poznat po rizicima, a rizik se isplatio na duge staze za “Altered States”. Film je završio na 25. mjestu top-liste gledanosti 1980. u američkim kinima, daleko ispod megahita “Imperij uzvraća udarac”, pa i “Isijavanja”, “Flasha Gordona” i “Razjarenog bika” koji su se smatrali financijskim krahovima, posebice potonja dva ostvarenja.

No, godinama kasnije jasno je da se radilo o vizionarskom ostvarenju ispred svoga vremena, odveć ekstravagantnom, drastičnom i ekstremnom da ga (šira) publika pojmi i prihvati u vrijeme kinopremijere. Halucinantna “Izmijenjena stanja” otvorila su portal nove dekade, osamdesetih, kao izrazito vizualan film s pionirskim prostetičkim, ali i računalno potpomognutim efektima, dvije godine prije kompjuterski revolucionarnog “Trona”.

Gledajući nanovo “Altered States” uopće ne iznenađuje da je film snimio direktor fotografije “Blade Runnera” Jordan Cronenweth. Russell je sagradio čvrsti most između LSD psihodelije “djece cvijeća” kasnih šezdesetih/ranih sedamdesetih objedinjene u tripoidnoj “Odiseji u svemiru” i vizualno prijelomnih SF-ova osamdesetih poput “Istrebljivača” te “body horrora” epohe preuzevši štafetu od “Aliena” (“Američki vukodlak u Londonu”, “Stvor”, “Terminator”, “Muha”, “Skriveni”, “RoboCop”...).

U tom procesu redatelj je stvorio unikatnu mješavinu SF-a, psihološkog i tjelesnog horora s internim i eksternim manifestacijama odiseje u svemiru ljudskog uma, odlazeći od psihološke strave vršnjačkog “Isijavanja” prema tjelesnom užasu filmova Davida Cronenberga. Uvodna scena filma je sugestivna po pitanju nadolazeće onostranosti.

Dr. Edward Jessup (Hurt) nalazi se izoliran u vertikalnom spremniku za senzornu deprivaciju nalik starom bojleru i širi granice svoga uma i svijesti. Kad izađe iz komore, Jessup otkriva da je halucinirao samo tako i proživljavao raznolika stanja – stanja sna, mistična stanja... Također, plakao je i ponovno proživljavao očevu smrt.

Jessup proučava šizofreniju koja po njemu nije bolest i istražuje njome izazvana druga stanja svijesti. On je “Faust” spreman “prodati dušu da dozna veliku istinu”. Sedam godina kasnije, Edward na rubu razvoda od supruge Emily (Blair Brown) nastavlja gdje je stao s eksperimentima na sebi, ali odlazi korak dalje do točke pucanja da objasni “besmislen užas života” nakon što je čvaknuo meksičke gljive od Indijanaca.

Kombinacija gljiva i senzorne deprivacije dovest će do toga da se Jessup u umu vrati milijunima godina unatrag i iskusi doživljaj postanka svemira i kreacije čovjeka kao takvog, da otkrije svoje “drugo ja” i “primitivno ja”. Kad Jessup postane “proto-čovjek”, film je preteča “American Werewolf In London” i koketira s dr. Jekyll/mr. Hyde dualnošću, može i dr. Banner/Hulk.

Međutim, znatno su košmarnije “body horror” scene eksternalizacije halucinacije s prizorima deformiranja ruke, stomaka... Općenito govoreći, svaka halucinacija je fascinantna u pirotehničkoj vizualnosti s eksplozijom provokativnih slika i jarkih boja, tj. prelijevanjem surealnih kadrova (jareća glava s multiplim očima, raspeće...).

Režirajući “Izmijenjena stanja”, Russell je probao gljive i to se vidi, ali zato film pršti od nevjerojatne kaleiodoskopske vizualizacije misli/svijesti “izvan našeg poimanja” o bogu, ljubavi, čovjeku i čovjekovu mjestu u svemiru tijekom Jessupove potrage za kozmičkom istinom. Senzorni doživljaj je maksimalno intenziviran u romantičnoj završnici sa svjetlucavim, pregrijanim ljubavnicima koji gore iznutra na razmeđi sadašnjosti i vječnosti. “Altered States” je više od filma. Psihodelično iskustvo.
